Formentera is Worst Affected by Storms in The Balearics
Lightning causes power outages across the Island
Severe weather alerts for the Balearics region that we reported on earlier this week have had mixed effects on the three main Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
With heavy rain, showers and dark skies threatening over the sea, most areas seems to have gotten away without the kind of damage and flooding that hit parts of the area in 2011. Worst hit appears to have been the Island of Formentera which saw at least 850 homes without power for some of Monday night and Tuesday morning. The storm settled over the areas of Salè Porto, Cala Saona and the area west of Es Cap de Barbaria, who were then without electricity for about five hours, due to a lightning strike. The first outage lasting only a few minutes as the storm touched down on the west of the Island, then early in the morning another lightning strike and crash of thunder caused another power outage.
Engineers were on scene straight away and attempting to determine the cause and fix the problem. The company explained that "it took a while to locate which towers 15,000 watt MV had been hit by lightning and then immediately they proceeded to repair."
Intense downpours mean that more than 13 litres per square meter have fallen, according to the indicator at La Savina. Luckily for most residents this was at night but would have meant an unpleasant morning, and the strong electric shock could have caused significant damage to devices such as routers or laptops.
Let's hope that is the end of it and that the sun has re-appeared on Formentera!
