September has just started, but the first autumn rains seem to have arrived at Ibiza and Formentera. The heavy storms, lasting for less than an hour, caused flooding, road closures, and even a tornado!

According to the Spanish National Meteorology Agency, the momentary inclement weather was caused by a short and fast storm line passing across the south of Ibiza, which meant that around 24 litres per square metre fell in just one hour.

It generated whirlwinds at sea, complicating the first day of razorfish fishing, which usually is usually a really festive occasion. In the Can Nebot area of Sant Antoni, a frightening tornado destroyed trees in its wake, but fortunately it caused no damage to people or houses.

The airport also suffered the consequences of the tempest, with a section of the access road cut off between 14:00 and 15:00 and leaking water at the check-in area.

A yellow alert is in place today due to more expected heavy rains and storms.
